AN OLD- FASHIONED "FROLIC"
An old-fashioned "frolic" was held on Saturday, August 4th at Cox's Auction House in Elgin, PA.
The original shingles on the roof were replaced with red steel, one hundred square, which equals 10,000 square feet, was put on the Auction House by a crew of Amish carpenters. Forty - five men arrived at 6:45 am on Saturday morning, and by 1:30 pm the entire job was completed. Red steel now covers the main auction hall, both the back auction hall and side auction annex, the kitchen area, offices and the front porch.
Preparation for the event began over a month ago when Auction House Owner Jeff Cox brought his idea to Amish frolic coordinator Lawrence Schrock, requesting help from the Spartansburg Amish community. The response was overwhelming. Schrock said there was no difficulty getting volunteers for the job, in part because of the friendships and working relationship forged many years ago when Auction Company Founder Al Cox joined the Spartansburg Amish community in their annual Memorial Day weekend Hospital Benefit Auction.
One of the Amish gentleman who participated eloquently explained: What is life if we don't help each other? It doesn't matter what religion we are, if we are Amish or Protestant or Catholic, we're all people. AL and Jeff have helped us for years at our Benefit Auctions, and we're happy for a chance to do something in return."
Friends, relatives and crew members connected to Cox Family Auctions prepared lunch on site for the workers. Many passer-by stopped to watch the work being done. The older among them reminded of the old days when an event like this was common-place.

The front office and main auction hall of the Cox Auction House were built in 1984. Since that time two more large halls have been added to accommodate the ever-growing number of consignments brought to us to be sold. The snack bar too was added after the original construction.
Auctions are held regularly on Mondays at Cox Auction House. Viewing of merchandise begins at noon of auction day. A friendly staff of office personnel begins registration at 4:00pm, giving each potential bidder a buyer number to be presented to the auctioneer at the time of each purchase. Purchasers are recorded by a clerk and sent to the cashiers office, where the amounts of purchased items are added up and must be paid for before the buyer leaves the auction.
An early bird auction of household items begins at 5:00pm in building #2 and may last one to three hours. In the main hall, the sale of antiques and collectibles begins at 6:00pm and lasts anywhere from three to five hours. Delicious food from the snack bar can be enjoyed from 4:00pm until 9:30pm of the auction day.
Consignments of salable goods are accepted on Tuesdays from 9:00am until 7:00pm without an appointment. Consignments received on Tuesdays are carefully set up by a knowledgeable staff of handlers and sold the following Monday.
Specialty auctions selling items such as quilts, firearms, tools, sporting goods, limited edition prints, coins and quality antiques are scheduled throughout the year and sold on days of the week other than Mondays. These auctions are advertised separately. Check out our Upcoming Auctions page for more details.
